GUP #70 - VAULT
The etymological meaning of the word ‘magazine’ – serving as a storehouse – is what triggered the idea to come up with a slightly unusual concept for this issue, by showcasing some examples of work as currently archived on our ‘webzine’; single images of excellent bodies of work that we think really deserve to be brought to the fore again.
The vault is getting emptied while it is also filling up. The ever-increasing number of images available in the world – and the digitisation of print archives only accelerates this process – encourages a growing number of artists to dig into all sorts of archives. We showcase portfolios of Alexandra Lethbridge and Alnis Stakle, both in their own way generating visual experiences that subvert the context in which the images originally appeared.
As usual, we’re announcing upcoming events and newly launched publications, and continue promoting talent: Masha Svyagator (also appropriating archival material), Sander Vos – recently spotted via our own talent programme New/Fresh Eyes – and Theo Elias. Not least of all, we highlight artists who are now arriving in mid-career: Lucas Foglia announces a previously unpublished student work of his and Namsa Leuba reflects on an upcoming overview exhibition in the US and a related publication.
